Lyra is a pet carrier for your cat or small dog on the plane. At standard size, it measures 40 x 30 x 24 cm, exactly the cabin maximum at Transavia.

What makes it different: it expands on three sides. A mesh room folds out left and right, and the roof lifts about 5 cm. Your cat can stretch out and almost sit up.

The video shows the three sides folding out, how the curtains work and how the carrier slides over your suitcase.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Expands on 3 sides: room to stretch
  • 3 privacy curtains, each in its own zip pocket
  • Slides over your suitcase handle, plus shoulder strap
  • Soft mat on a firm base, also in the side rooms

Cons

  • The zips are a bit stiff, especially at first

Lyra is one of my favourite carriers in our range. There's a lot in it: curtains you roll down when your pet wants to sleep, and a roof that lifts up.

To be honest: the zips are a bit stiff. Not sure your pet will fit? Send me a WhatsApp and we'll check together.

Grey Lyra carrier folded flat in its plastic packaging, as it is delivered

Lyra arrives folded flat in the box. After the trip, fold it flat the same way and put it away.

Size: standard and expanded

Standard size: 40 x 30 x 24 cm, that's how it goes under the seat.

Expanded, it's a lot wider and taller: only outside the plane, at the gate, in the car or at your hotel. Zip the sides and roof back in before boarding.

Please note: the size can vary by ± 1 cm. Lyra is made of soft fabric, not hard plastic, so it differs slightly per carrier. That's a production tolerance we can't control. Because it's soft, it's easy to squeeze a little under the seat.

Will your pet fit? How to measure

All you need is a tape measure. Measure your pet while it stands calmly. On the plane the carrier is not expanded, so your pet needs to lie down within 40 x 30 cm, with 24 cm height.

Measuring a cat for the Lyra carrier: max. 6.3 kg, max. 35 cm long and 24 cm tall

Measuring a cat

  1. Weight: max. 6.3 kg;
  2. Length: from the nose to the base of the tail (without the tail), max. 35 cm;
  3. Height: from the floor to the top of the head, standing, max. 24 cm.

Cats usually curl up when travelling, so length matters most.

Measuring a dog for the Lyra carrier in three steps: weight, length and height

Measuring a dog

  1. Weight: max. 6.3 kg;
  2. Length: from the nose to the base of the tail, max. 35 cm;
  3. Height: from the floor to the withers (top of the shoulders), max. 24 cm.

In the cabin your dog lies down in the carrier, it doesn't need to stand up.

Compare your measurements with the maximum sizes in the image. And don't forget the weight: with this carrier, Transavia allows up to 6.3 kg.

Get your pet used to it at home

Don't let your pet see the carrier for the first time at the airport.

1 to 2 weeks before: leave it open, all sides expanded, with a familiar blanket and the occasional treat. Then close it a few times and walk around the house.

Practise not expanded too: that's how it will be on the plane.

Lyra opens on three sides: both sides and the top. That gives your pet extra room on the go.

Frequently asked questions

Does this carrier meet Transavia's rules?
Yes, when it's not expanded. At standard size the carrier measures 40 x 30 x 24 cm, exactly the maximum Transavia lists for pet carriers in the cabin. It's made of fabric, closes fully and has mesh for ventilation.
How heavy can my cat or dog be?
Transavia allows 8 kg for pet and carrier together. The carrier weighs 1.7 kg, so your cat or dog can weigh up to 6.3 kg.
Can I expand the carrier on the plane?
No. Expanded, the carrier is larger than 40 x 30 x 24 cm, and on Transavia it has to stay closed under the seat for the whole flight. Use the extra room at the gate, in the car or in your hotel room.
What are the curtains for?
Many cats and dogs calm down when it's darker. Roll the three curtains over the mesh when your pet wants to sleep. Don't need them? Roll each curtain into its own pocket and zip it shut.
How much does a pet in the cabin cost on Transavia?
EUR 50 per pet per one-way flight on flights with an HV number. If you fly Transavia France (flight number starts with TO), it's EUR 60 to 180. You add your pet when booking your flight or later via My Transavia. Spaces are limited, so do it early.
Which destinations are not allowed for pets?
Transavia doesn't carry pets to and from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Scotland, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates and Chambéry airport. This is due to the rules at those airports.
Can I put the carrier on my suitcase?
Yes. A sleeve on the back slides over the telescopic handle of your suitcase, so you don't have to carry it through the terminal.
My pet weighs more than 6.3 kg. What now?
Then this carrier takes you over the 8 kg Transavia allows in the cabin. Send us a message on WhatsApp and we'll look for another solution together.
Is the mat washable?
Yes. Take the mat out, hand wash it in lukewarm water and let it air dry.
