The Lyra is an expandable pet carrier for your cat or small dog on the plane. At standard size it measures 40 x 30 x 23 cm, exactly the cabin maximum on Turkish Airlines.

What makes it different: it expands on three sides. A mesh section opens on the left and right, and the roof rises about 5 cm. Your cat can stretch out and almost sit upright.

Pros and cons

Pros

Expands on 3 sides: room to stretch
3 privacy curtains, each in its own zip pocket
Slides over your suitcase handle, plus shoulder strap
Soft mat on a firm base, also in the expanded sections

Cons

The zips are a bit stiff, especially the first few times

I think the Lyra is one of the nicest bags we have. There's a lot to it: curtains you roll down when your pet wants to sleep, and a roof that goes up.

To be honest: the zips are a bit stiff. Not sure your pet will fit? Send me a WhatsApp and we'll check together.

Expandable pet carrier 40x30x23: standard and expanded

At standard size: 40 x 30 x 23 cm, that's how it goes under the seat.

Expanded, it is a lot wider and taller: only outside the plane, at the gate, in the car or in your hotel. Before boarding, zip the sides and roof closed again.

Please note: the size can vary by ± 1 cm. The Lyra is made of soft fabric, not hard plastic, so it differs slightly per bag. That's a production tolerance we can't control. Because it's soft, it's easy to squeeze a little under the seat.

Will your pet fit? How to measure

All you need is a tape measure. Measure your pet while it stands calmly. On the plane the bag is not expanded, so your pet needs to lie down in 40 x 30 cm, with 23 cm of height.

Measuring a cat

Weight: max. 6.3 kg;
Length: from the nose to the base of the tail (without tail), max. 35 cm;
Height: from the floor to the top of the head, standing, max. 23 cm.

Cats usually lie curled up while travelling. Length matters most then.

Measuring a dog

Weight: max. 6.3 kg;
Length: from the nose to the base of the tail, max. 35 cm;
Height: from the floor to the withers (top of the shoulders), max. 23 cm.

In the cabin your dog lies down in the bag, it doesn't need to stand upright.

And don't forget the weight: on Turkish Airlines that is max. 6.3 kg with this bag.

Let your pet get used to it at home

Don't let your pet see the bag for the first time at the airport.

1 to 2 weeks before: leave it open, all sides expanded, with a familiar blanket and the occasional treat. Then close it a few times and walk around the house.

Practise with it not expanded too: that's how it is on the plane. With a connection in Istanbul you're on the road for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Does this carrier meet the Turkish Airlines rules?

Yes, when it is not expanded. At standard size the carrier measures 40 x 30 x 23 cm, exactly the maximum Turkish Airlines lists for pet carriers in the cabin. It is soft, has a firm base and mesh for ventilation.

How heavy can my cat or dog be?

Turkish Airlines allows 8 kg for pet and bag together. The bag weighs 1.7 kg, so your cat or dog can weigh up to 6.3 kg.

Can I expand the bag on the plane?

No. Expanded, the bag is bigger than 40 x 30 x 23 cm, and it has to stay closed under the seat for the whole flight. Use the extra space at the gate, during a long layover or in your hotel room.

How much does a pet in the cabin cost on Turkish Airlines?

It depends on your route. Turkish Airlines charges per carrier, not per animal, and with a connection you pay per flight. Their website has a calculator to work out the exact price. You book your pet online or in the app, up to 6 hours before departure.

Can my pet fly to every destination?

No. Turkish Airlines does not carry pets to the United Kingdom, including on connecting flights. Flying to the US or Türkiye? Check the extra rules for documents and vaccinations on their website.

What are the curtains for?

Many cats and dogs calm down when it is darker. Roll the three curtains over the mesh when your pet wants to sleep. Not needed? Roll each curtain into its own pocket and zip it shut.

Can I put the bag on my suitcase?

Yes. A strap on the back slides over the telescopic handle of your suitcase. Handy for a connection in Istanbul, where you sometimes walk quite a way.

My pet weighs more than 6.3 kg. What now?

Then with this bag you go over the 8 kg Turkish Airlines allows in the cabin. Send us a WhatsApp message and we'll look at another solution together.

What if my pet has an accident in the bag?

The base fabric holds back moisture for a while, but it is not fully waterproof. So put an absorbent travel pad under the mat, especially on a long trip with a connection. We sell 45 x 33 cm travel pads that fit this bag.

Is the mat washable?

Yes. Take out the mat and the hard base board, hand wash them in lukewarm water and let them air dry.
