The Miravia is a rectangular soft pet carrier measuring 55 x 40 x 23 cm. That is exactly the maximum size Austrian Airlines allows in the cabin. No rigid frame, wheels or telescopic handle, so it fits under the seat in front of you.

Three curtains (two on the sides, one on top) help your pet settle down and protect against rain and wind. The rectangular shape uses all the space under the seat.

Why Austrian Airlines travellers choose the Miravia

  • Sized to Austrian Airlines rules 55x40x23 cm (118 cm in total). Every centimetre the rules allow is used
  • Soft, no frame or wheels Austrian Airlines asks for a soft carrier without a rigid frame, wheels or telescopic handle. The Miravia meets that requirement
  • Rectangular, not curved The space under an aircraft seat is rectangular. A curved top loses interior height. The Miravia keeps it along the full length
  • 3 privacy curtains Two on the sides and one on top. Lower them and the carrier becomes a quiet den. Outdoors they protect against rain and wind
  • Only 1.95 kg A light carrier leaves more weight allowance for your pet within the 8 kg limit for pet and carrier combined
  • Scratch-resistant mesh, 5 sides Good ventilation, even when the carrier is closed. Your pet stays in the closed carrier for the whole flight
  • Practical details Top and side opening, locking zipper, built-in safety leash, 4 pockets, luggage strap, metal hardware

Measuring a cat for an Austrian Airlines size cabin carrier: length from nose to base of tail and height to the head

🐱 Measuring a cat

  1. Length: from the nose to the base of the tail (tail excluded);
  2. Height: from the floor to the top of the head, standing;
  3. Width: at the widest point, usually the shoulders.

The Miravia suits cats up to about 45 cm long and 23 cm tall. Cats usually lie curled up during the flight, so length matters most.

Get your pet used to the carrier at home

If your pet sees the carrier for the first time at the airport, it means stress for both of you.

Leave the Miravia open at home a week or two before the flight. Put a familiar blanket inside and add a treat now and then. Then practise a few times with the carrier closed and reward your pet afterwards. On travel day the carrier already smells like home.

On travel day: put an absorbent blanket on the base and add a favourite toy. Your pet stays in the closed carrier for the whole flight.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Miravia meet Austrian Airlines rules?
Yes. The carrier measures 55x40x23 cm. That is exactly the maximum Austrian Airlines publishes for pet carriers in the cabin. It is soft and has no rigid frame, wheels or telescopic handle. Register your pet early, because the number of pets per flight is limited.
Which other airlines does this size fit?
55x40x23 cm also falls within the published cabin limits of Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways, Finnair, airBaltic and Aegean Airlines. Always check your airline's current pet policy before booking.
How heavy can my pet be?
Austrian Airlines allows 8 kg for pet and carrier combined. The Miravia weighs 1.95 kg, so your pet can weigh up to about 6.05 kg.
How much does a pet in the cabin cost?
On flights within Europe, Austrian Airlines charges EUR 80 per flight, plus a ticket service fee that varies by departure location. On domestic flights within Austria it is EUR 65. Check the current prices on the airline's website.
Can I take my pet in the cabin to the United Kingdom?
No. To some countries, such as the United Kingdom and South Africa, pets must travel as cargo, regardless of size. Check the rules for your destination before booking.
What if my pet is heavier?
Then your pet can travel in the hold with Austrian Airlines, in a hard crate that meets IATA rules. Snub-nosed breeds, such as the Pug, French Bulldog and Persian cat, are not accepted in the hold. They are allowed in the cabin, within the 8 kg limit.
What are the curtains for?
The two side curtains and the top curtain reduce visual stimuli in busy places. Outdoors they protect your pet against rain and wind. Roll them up and the mesh stays open for fresh air.
Why rectangular instead of curved?
The space under an aircraft seat is rectangular. A curved carrier loses interior height along the top. A rectangular carrier keeps full height along its entire length. Your pet gets more usable space within the same limit.
Can a large cat travel in this carrier?
Yes. At 55 cm long, this is one of the roomiest cabin carriers. The cat can weigh up to about 6.05 kg and must of course be able to stand, lie down and turn around.
